The Holy Spirit Crown of the Açores (Azores)

The cult of the Holy Spirit has a vitality in the Azores that distinguishes it from all the other religious practices that are (or were) brought over from the mainland of Portugal. As if it were a tree, it acclimatized to the island soil, preserving the original roots that stem from medieval times. Strongly influenced by the millenarianism of Joachim of Fiore (1132-1202), it is said to have been brought to Portugal by Saint Elizabeth of Aragon (1271-1336), Queen of Portgugal, known as Rainha Santa Isabel (Queen Saint Isabel).

The Holy Spirit, which is traditionally represented in Christian iconography by the white dove, is, in the arichipelago of the Azores, associated with the silver Crown with 4, 5, or 6 half arches bearing a sphere that sybolizes the earthly globe. Above this sphere, on the top of the crown and of the world, a spread-winged dove symbolizes the Reign of the Divine over mankind.
