This shawl is based on a lid of an inkstone box that is decorated with a scene of large-scale autumn flowering plants-bush clover, pampas grass, ague weed, valerian, and aster-illuminated by a crescent moon. The images, read together with three calligraphic characters, identify a famous Japanese poem from the tenth-century imperial anthology Kokinshu:
Aki nara de
Oku shira tsuyu wa
Nezame suru
Waga tamakura no
Shizuku narikeri
They were but tears shed
Upon my pillowing sleeve
when I awakened-
Those transparent drops of dew
Straying from autumn's season
